Brookdale Community College is hosting a Civic Engagement & Empowerment Conference 9 a.m. to noon Friday, Oct. 1 via Zoom. Registration is required.
“Our aim is to introduce students to the three A’s: Awareness, Advocacy, and Action,” said Jonathan Moschberger, chair of Brookdale’s political science department.
“We need to become aware that certain problems exist. Awareness is that key first step toward involvement and engagement,” said Moschberger, who is also coordinator of BCC’s honors program and president emeritus of the New Jersey Political Science Association.
“Once we become ‘in the know,’ it’s up to us to spread that awareness to others through our advocacy efforts. The idea of spreading awareness is like a ripple effect whereby we will be informing and engaging others about an issue of concern. From there, it’s all about action. Taking our involvement to that ultimate level and immersing ourselves in the political process in order to bring about a greater good. That’s really what it’s all about: making a difference,” said Moschberger.
Speakers include fellow students, professors, political scientists, lobbyists, journalists, activists, advocates and others.
