Registered students can now work out in the Brookdale Fitness Center free of charge. The center is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The Center was closed for almost 18 months due to COVID-19 concerns. “We reopened right after Thanksgiving,” said Greg Mahadeen, fitness center coordinator. “We started with six hours a week, and now we are up to 15 hours a week, mostly due to student demand.”
The Fitness Center at Brookdale is an often-overlooked resource for students. Located on the Lincroft campus in the Recreation and Event Center (B-REC,) it is adjacent to the Collins Arena. The most convenient parking is in Lot 6 or 7.
The Fitness Center’s mission is to provide a safe and friendly workout environment, supported by professional services that promote lifelong health and wellness.
Unfortunately, the center’s website is out of date and currently does not have accurate information for students. “It’s been a work in progress,” Mahadeen said.
“Because we did not know what to expect after our soft reopening, the Fitness Center landing page was inaccurate, and we deleted most of the information from the website. It will be added back as we move to being fully open once again,” he said.
As part of the recovery, maintenance was performed on over 120 pieces of equipment, and additional spacing was added to comply with COVID restrictions.
“We have a beautiful center,” said Mahadeen. “We have plenty of free space, a lot of cardio, ellipticals, bikes, and weight-training equipment. As more students return, we will increase our hours.”
Masks are optional in the cardio area, but throughout the rest of the Center, masks are required. The mask mandate is expected to be changed to mask-optional within the next week or so.
