Sunday, May 1 the “Walk MS” event will take place in Asbury Park.
Brookdale Community College has a team captained by Professor Chad Anderson of the Communication Media department. Located at Bradley Park, the event will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the walk will commence at 10 a.m.
Students can join the Brookdale team, create a team of their own, “Or really just donate to the MS walk. It’s more important that donations are made than what team or individual it goes to,” said Chad Anderson.

The event offers different distances for participants to walk, with both one- and three-mile routes available. “But the walk is more so just about exposure. People could show up and just be present and walk as far as they want. But just showing visible support is what it’s really all about. If the weather is good, I may walk the course twice,” Anderson said.

As of April 15, the Brookdale team has fundraised almost $795 to fund research and the development of treatments. “So far, we have raised a bunch of money. Some of which is from people who don’t have a connection to me, but have a proud relationship with Brookdale,” Anderson said.

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society defines the disease as, “a chronic, unpredictable disease of the central nervous system, which is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves.” The disease can affect an individual in several ways with the most common being, “fatigue, numbness and tingling, blurred vision, double vision, weakness, poor coordination, imbalance, pain, depression and problems with memory and concentration,” according to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

The incurable disease affects more than 2 million people worldwide, and estimates are that about 1 million people in the United States live with MS. There are four disease courses that have been defined, clinically isolated syndrome, relapsing-remitting MS, secondary progressive MS, and primary progressive MS.

Members of the Brookdale community, or those who feel inclined can register and/or donate by using the web address, mssociety.donordrive.com/team/26434.
