The war in Sudan has been ongoing for over seven months and needs to come to an end. The war is between Sudan armed forces and the rebel Rapid Support Forces.
The fighting started in April in the capital of Sudan, and the battle has claimed over 9,000 lives. Different countries have even started picking sides as Egyptian military and Libya militia have been backing different sides.
The UNICEF (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) has called for more support as Sudan has become the largest child displacement crisis in the world. Refugee and asylum seekers have also become a growing problem due to the war.
There are 1.2 million refugees in Sudan and 4.8 million internationally displaced people who have fled to neighboring countries. UNICEF has now doubled their budget to aid refugees, providing over $1 billion in aid until the end of year. The war is costing civilian quality of life and costing the UNICEF a ton of time and money.
Civilians, mostly children, have begun really suffering. There is a starvation crisis in Sudan. Fourteen million children are still in Sudan and need support. Hospitals and orphanages have been attacked and evacuated. Shelters for once internally displaced people have been burned down. Sudanese children are not able to attend school currently.
The war has really taken a toll on civilians and refugees and the time is now to raise awareness, so there can be an end.
Brookdale students can raise awareness on the situation via the internet and become more educated on the war. Students can also take time to talk to fellow students and put flyers up around the school to educate people on the war. Another action Brookdale students can take is donating to the war to help the refugees and families that are running low on food. These families need aid and a little bit of money can go a long way.
