Students looking to make a difference as well as a chance to learn valuable problem-solving and leadership skills are being urged to get involved with Brookdale’s Governance.
Two student positions are available on the Academic Council, Academic Standards, Foundational Studies and College Life committees. Also, one student opening each exists on the Institutional Planning and Effectiveness and General Education committees and four students are needed for the Student Development committee.
Joining a committee is a great way for students to lend their knowledge and have their voices heard on issues happening on campus. Additionally, committee service improves problem-solving and leadership skills and provides real-life experience in such areas as public speaking and critical thinking.
Students on Governance serve to represent the Brookdale student body.
The Chair of Governance, Deborah Almeida said this about students being involved in governance:
“Students’ opinions are important in the development of college-wide regulations and procedures,” said Deborah Almeida, Governance chair. “Having students involved with the committees and working with the committees to complete their charges will help the students develop a sense of belonging.”
Students can join a committee by sending an email to Almeida at [email protected] and/or Membership Coordinator, Karina Ochs [email protected], requesting to join a specific committee.
The Steering Committee then takes a vote on whether they believe the student should serve or not, and the student is notified.
Only full-time students can serve on a committee in Governance. If any student feels this is an issue, they can voice their concerns at a Governance forum. All arguments will be considered.
But what is Governance? Governance is a collaborative system that includes committees made of students and college employees that make recommendations regarding Brookdale’s regulations, practices and procedures. These recommendations are ultimately decided upon by the College President, Dr. David Stout.
Governance has achieved many things on campus, for example banning smoking on campus, and the regulation of firearms on campus.
Students interested in Governance who do not want to commit to a specific committee can attend a forum. Forums happen multiple times during the fall and spring semesters.
Attending a forum is a great way to keep up to date on what is happening at Brookdale and voice your opinions at open discussions.
If you join a committee and are not able to attend the meetings you can be removed from the committee.
You can find a schedule for meetings and forums here: https://www.brookdalecc.edu/vp-learning/meeting-calendar/
