Who do Brookdale students believe is going to win Super Bowl LVIII, the San Francisco 49ers or the Kansas City Chiefs?
“Interesting matchup, but you really can’t bet against (Chiefs’ quaterback Patrick) Mahomes anymore. I think he’s too good and experienced to fall short of a title,” said Robert Davin, a 20-year-old history major from Yorketown, who added, “Andy Reid helps, too.”
However, not all Brookdale students believe it’s a foregone conclusion the Chiefs will win their second straight championship. Haley Lorenzo, an 18-year-old undecided from Marlboro is among some locals with a grudge. “Anyone but the Chiefs again cause they beat Philly last year, which made me and my family depressed for weeks.”
“Hopefully the Niners (win,) right?” Lorenzo said.
Since none of the local teams, such as the Giants, Jets, or Eagles, made a deep playoff run, many students may feel more apathetic toward the big game.
“If I had to pick a winner I’d say the Chiefs,” said Nate Woodward, a 21-year-old psychology major from Aberdeen. “I don’t care for either team, so I’m just picking who has the best player, and that’s Mahomes for sure.”
The excitement level about the game rises a little among students 21 and older; many of whom have found a way of making it a little more interesting, through online betting.
“I’m literally going to bet on everything, coin flip, first reception, who scores the first touchdown, color of the gatorade of course. Yeah, I could go on and on,” said Fred Khotinsky, a 23-year-old economics major from Manalapan.
Some students will only be tuning in to catch the halftime show, which Usher is headlining. Others are looking forward to the commercials.
For the first time, the Super Bowl will be held in Las Vegas, at Allegiant Stadium, home of the Las Vegas Raiders.
The game will be played 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 11.
