“If you associate with mean people, your mental health is going to suffer,” said 19-year-old culinary arts student Vinny Piatti of Leonardo. However, Piatti and many other students also find a lot of good in using social media apps. Students interviewed said they have found ways to use social media to enhance their lives.
“I spend most time on TikTok and Reddit. I love Reddit and think it’s an underrated app,” Piatti said. “I spend about four hours on TikTok and an hour on Reddit daily.”
“If you associate with your fellow hobbyists, it can be beneficial because you may chat and learn new things,” said Piatti.
“Without Reddit, I wouldn’t have found my ancestors. I was able to get in contact with them, and now we speak often.” Through social media, Piatti has made vast connections and grown closer to relatives, utilizing the online world as a means of communication.
“I usually go on Snapchat more than any other app,” said Kim Feter, a 21-year-old business major of Middletown. “I talk to a lot of people there.”
“I have TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat and Pinterest. I probably use TikTok and Instagram the most when I post pics,” said Kim Banks, a 20-year-old arts major from Holmdel.
While social media undoubtedly contains its highs and lows, each user has the power to enhance their experience. Following useful accounts that spread positivity, while exercising safety controls such as block and restrict options, can provide one with a secure online browse.
