It is safe to say after making the playoffs in 2022, the New York Giants had a very disappointing season. Despite this, the fanbase is always excited for the next calendar year of the football season to begin.
The Giants have been notorious for having poor drafts in past years, and they were hoping to turn that narrative around by picking a superstar player in the 2024 draft. The Giants had the sixth overall pick in the draft, the last time they had the sixth overall pick was in 2019 when they selected Daniel Jones, their current quarterback.
Leading up to the draft there were rumors the Giants could look to take a quarterback to replace Jones after he was selected with the same pick just five years ago. Some names that were floating around were Drake Maye and J.J. McCarthy.
However, these were just rumors, and the Giants used the pick on Malik Nabers, a wide receiver from LSU. This is the second time in the team’s history that they used a first-round pick on a LSU wide receiver, as they took Odell Beckham Jr. in 2014, and he went on to be one of the most productive players in Giants history up until his ACL injury.
The last time the Giants used a first-round pick on a wide receiver was in 2021 when they selected Kadarius Toney from Florida. Toney showed great potential in his time in New York. However, his alleged attitude problem and inability to get along with the coaching staff and front office is said to have led to his being traded less than a year after he was drafted.
Wide receiver has been one of the biggest issues on the team and they have not had a 1,000-yard receiver since 2018 when Odell Beckham Jr did it. Nabers will hope to break that streak and be an immediate impact player.
It is worth noting that considering the team did not address the quarterback position, Jones is expected to remain the starter for the entirety of the 2024 season. He is under contract for another 3 years, but the Giants can cut him after the season with no dead money.
