Brookdale will recognize Civility Week in mid February as an opportunity for both students and staff to learn about poverty and inspire change.
On Monday, Feb. 17, “The Alternatives to Violence Poject,” a communication and conflict resolution project workshop, will be led by Human Services students and feature Angela Kariotis, the director of the Center for Transformative Learning. The one-hour program begins at 11 a.m. in Twin Lights I, SLC 106.
On Tuesday, Feb. 18, the Global Citizenship Project will present a discussion on global poverty featuring English Professor Kelsey Maki along with English students and members of the International Student Association. Also being held in Twin Lights I, SLC 106, the program beings at 11:45 a.m.
Also on Feb. 18, in the Twin Lights Room, a Stigma-Free Speaker will be presented by the Psychology and Human Services Club. The featured speak will be Dr. Christine Greco-Covington. The one-hour session will begin at 1:30 p.m.
On Wednesday, Feb. 19, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The Cost of Poverty Experience will present an immersive experience designed to help attendees understand the challenges of coping with poverty. Dr. Anita Voogt and Gina Giannattasio, will present the program.
Thursday will feature two programs. Sara Burrill, a professor of psychology and faculty fellow to the Center for Transformative Learning, will present on poverty-informed teaching practices at 1:30 p.m. in Twin Lights I.
Later, English Professor Elana Maloney will lead a discussion on Zoom with documentary film directors Chris Temple and Zach Ingrai about their film, “This Is Not Financial Advice,” which exposes the risks and rewards of today’s market through commentary and the anxiety-inducing stories of real people trying to make millions. The program runs from 7:30 to 8:45 p.m.
The final Civility Week event takes place 11 a.m. Friday in SLC 103 and will consist of a “Living Room Conversation” about poverty at Brookdale, featuring Dr. Ave Latte of the Education Department and Angela Kariotis, director of the Center for Transformative Learning.
