For many, winter can feel like it lasts an eternity. After the joyous feeling of the holiday season passes, it can often feel like there is nothing to look forward to until spring arrives. Even the sun feels a lack of energy, only showing its radiance until late afternoon.
However, in my experience I have gathered some ways to make the winter season a little bit more tolerable, and in some ways, even look forward to this time.
Explore a winter activity
There are endless possibilities of winter activities waiting to be explored. Some traditional ideas that come to mind are skiing, snowboarding, and even sledding with friends. While those are all enjoyable, some may prefer a pastime with a cozier feel to it.
As someone who hates the cold, I turned to finding indoor classes that I would not normally seek out during the warmer months. Your local park system likely offers many instructor-led courses ranging from ballroom dancing to beginner crochet projects. Plus, this is a great way to potentially make a new friend!
Move your body
Similar to finding a winter activity you enjoy, moving your body during the colder months is very important. When we move, even if it is a 10-minute walk, our bodies release endorphins.
Endorphins are less formally known as “feel-good horomones” and are very important to mood regulation.
Additionally, exposure to sunlight is still necessary during the winter. So try your best to bundle up and get outside. It does not have to be for long.
Journaling and mindfulness
Remember, nothing lasts forever and that includes this winter season. In the meantime, journaling how you feel can be a healthy way to clear your mind and reflect on the season.
If writing is not your thing, a 5-minute meditation before you start your day can make a world of difference. There are endless guided practices on YouTube.
