In a world full of opportunity, creativity, art — and many creative people who are so good at each, it could be intimidating to start on an artistic journey.
But, hey, everyone started somewhere, and what’s a better place to begin than an art studio that welcomes all ages and art levels.
Located not too far from Brookdale’s campus, The Plant Place, at 253 Route 36 in Middletown, might be the perfect studio for students to start down a creative path, blow off some steam from stressful studying or simply enjoy time with friends. From crafts ranging from make your own gnome plant holder, to moss paintings, to sand art, they have it all.
While attending Plant Place’s Succulent Gnome Workshop class on Thursday, Feb. 13, owner Jen Johnson answered some questions as to how she started her studio.
“I didn’t want to go back to my corporate job where they were forcing me to go into the city. I wanted to do something that was much more personally fulfilling, rather than working in pharmaceuticals,” Johnson said.
“I really love my love for both crafts and for plants, and it was just the combination of the two. And, my daughter had this idea. She went to a similar place, not exact, and it just kind of grew from there,” she said. “I’ve always wanted to do something myself, and I had the space, which was nice. It really was just the right time.”
The Plant Place offers a convenient environment for people with disabilities as well. The studio recently provided a place for a blind customer to make a craft, Johnson said, explaining how it was a fun and easy activity for the customer since the session was based on touch.
Diving into the gnome class, Johnson assisted with how to decorate the selected pot and how to plant and add a succulent afterward. The Plant Place has a large variety of things to add into art projects, consisting of seashells, different colored sands, different colored moss, and multiple succulent plants including cacti. The craft itself cost $15, but depending on how big certain projects are, they can go up to about $100.
Along the walls, The Plant Place has shelves set up of the other crafts that are offered, which can be purchased at that moment and done then and there. With no reservation needed, bring your own snacks, and BYOB, The Plant Place is an extremely convenient space for a good activity with friends, or family.
