Every semester at Brookdale hundreds of students look for guidance on their next move, whether its registration, schedule changes or career planning, all of which is provided by Brookdale’s advisers. Candice Watts, associate director at the Freehold Campus, helps students connect to these services.
While supervising the Freehold campus, Watts is also responsible for assisting in both financial and academic aid for students. Every day, the Middletown Township resident and mother of three works to guide students through their academic struggles, a service that is entirely free to students.
Students are given the opportunity to speak to advisers directly through appointments via email, phone or in person. Students are also able to walk in to see their adviser without the need for an appointment.
Additionally Brookdale advisers, including Watts, take time to sit down with students transferring out or first enrolling to paint a clear picture of their academic situation, what to expect, and where to go next.
In her own words, Watts believes it is the role of an academic adviser to be, “dedicated to helping students navigate their college experience, achieve their academic goals and prepare for their future careers.”
Watts attributes her passion for her work to having pride and the confidence in knowing that she is a part of the successes Brookdale students hope to achieve.
Watts credits her resolve and resourcefulness to a time when she was transitioning her own life and “pretty much starting my whole life over.”
“Whether it be guiding them through their major, helping them figure out their schedule, or navigating the financial aid system, I do my best to ensure they have the best possible outcome,” she said.
