The last stretch of the spring semester is upon us. While the trees start to bloom and the temperatures begin to rise, so does the pressure of being a college student. Here are a few ways to combat stress and make this time more manageable.
1. Make A (Realistic) Plan
While it may sound simple, planning can be incredibly complex. In an ideal world, everything would go according to plans during finals week. However, life is not always predictable, and bumps in the road will inevitably happen. During finals, it is important to make a plan that allows for space in your schedule.
For example, while it may look achievable in your phone calendar, studying for eight hours straight with no break for meals, socialization or other life commitments is unrealistic. Instead, try to plan out smaller blocks of time throughout the weeks leading up to final exams. It will feel less daunting and make life a
lot easier than cramming in those last few days.
2. Take Breaks
In relation to the first point, allowing for breaks between studying and exams is very important. Whether you spend your breaks enjoying lunch, chatting with friends or going on a relaxing nature walk is up to you. Even just 15 minutes of putting the textbook to the side can help clear your mind.
3. Study Groups
Studying alone can feel isolating and lead to a lack of motivation. If you can, try and study with a group. Being around others will not only push you to get the work done, but it also allows for help with any questions you may have while reviewing your course content. Others may have different study methods, which can always be interesting to learn from. Plus, you may even make a new friend!
4. Reflect and Recognize Your Efforts
No matter what grades you receive at the end of the semester, it is important to look back at the last semester and reflect on the ways you have grown as a student. Every day is a new opportunity for change, and it is important that you give yourself credit for your dedication to your studies. Being in college is not an easy task, so be proud of yourself for taking on this challenge!
