Remembering Sammi
December 9, 2019
The Current pays tribute to student artist Sammi Simancas who died Nov 4.
A vigil was held for student Sammi Simancas on Nov. 21 in the CVA Gallery. The Brookdale community cele- brated Sammi’s life, her talent and her art (featured at right). Students, faculty and staff were welcomed to speak about Sammi’s life. They created remembrance lanterns, decorated positive messages on them and placed tea lights inside. The students then placed them in a line outside of the building.

Why do we not continue to honor/remember Sammi today? It’s a horrible thing that happened but it should be acknowledged. Lots of students face depression and letting people know that we have help out there is important…we should have a permanent memorial for Sammi. As someone who struggles with depression I’m disappointed seeing my school sweep this under the rug.
