Do you have an interest in English, getting involved in the Brookdale community or joining an
honors society? What about all three? Then consider joining the English Club.
“Our meeting is going to be Thursday, Nov. 13 on Zoom at noon. We want to hopefully get a big turnout,” said Anthony Castello, a 20-year-old business major from Howell and the president of the English Club.
Because this club is still fairly new, they only meet once a month. In the meantime, Castello and other members are brainstorming event plans for this winter.
“We want to do either a book drive or a bake sale for December. These couple months, we’re just
trying to get our names out there,” he said. “You can get volunteer hours and experience.”
Besides giving back in the form of community service, members also have the chance to join its honors society.
“People should join the English club / sKD (the English Honor Society for two-year colleges) because many four-year colleges offer some sort of variation of an English honors society,” Castello said. “It looks very good for transfer requests.”
The club has garnered four members so far before its first meeting, including Charlotte McDevitt, an 18-year-old English major from Atlantic Highlands. McDevitt said she is interested in the variety of activities and opportunities the group is promising to offer.
“Community service makes you feel good,” she said. “I like community service, and now I get to do it under the school’s name. It’s a cool club to put down. I’m also interested in being part of an honor society if I’m gonna transfer, and this has both of those things.”
Because English Club is brand new, e-board spots for vice president, secretary and treasurer are
open. When enough members join, an election will be held to determine who will fill in those roles.
McDevitt encourages people to consider showing up to the first few meetings.
“You don’t have to be an English major to be in this club. Come to the English Club to talk to us and find out if it’s for you!”
