Monmouth County is well known for its local farming community.
In fact, the county is unique in that it is home to the Grown in Monmouth initiative, which aims to help the local agriculture scene. This program connects farmers with local groups and provides business assistance to those who want to grow their market.
But economics aside. Monmouth County’s farms provide a wide variety of fall fun activities from apple picking to tractor rides and everything in between. Here are some local places students can visit:
Eastmont Orchards – Colts Neck
This family-owned orchard’s trees were first planted in 1911. In 1923, the Barclay family purchased the farm from Fred Lynch who had little experience with agricultural practice, therefore the orchard was unsuccessful. After the Barclays purchased Eastmont Orchards it has been in operation ever since. Those who visit the orchard have the opportunity to pick their own selection of apples and peaches, as well as purchase other fresh produce.
Happy Day Farm – Manalapan
With over 130 acres of farmland, Happy Day Farm in Manalapan has something for everyone. Happy Day Farm is owned by Tim Stockel, or otherwise known as “farmer Tim.” The farm offers a corn maze, tractor rides and a petting zoo. For a souvenir to bring the experience home, there are pick your own pumpkins and sunflowers. Tickets are required for adults and children age 2 and up.
Twin Pond Farm – Howell
Twin Pond Farm has been family owned and operated since 1923. Twin Pond grows fresh produce, flowers and pumpkins for the autumn months. There is a corn maze and fresh bakery. On Sept. 29, the “Harvest at 49 Howell Road” event marks the grand opening of Twin Pond’s first agritourism farm, an expansion of the original location. This event has many attractions such as pumpkin ring toss and bowling, as well as hayrides. Tickets are required.
Longstreet Farm – Holmdel
Located within Holmdel Park, Longstreet Farm has been in operation since the 1890s. Home to friendly sheep, pigs, horses and cows this farm welcomes visitors all year round. They also grow a variety of crops. Longstreet farm aims to preserve the history of Monmouth County’s rural roots. The farm regularly hosts guided tours led by staff of the Monmouth County Park System, as well as free upcoming demonstrations on cookstove and cider making.
