The New York Jets are awful, and no one should be shocked.
Standing at 0-6 after their most recent loss in London against Denver, the Jets seemed to defy the odds to lose that game. The Jets didn’t turn the ball over, forced a turnover, committed only two penalties and held the Broncos to under 250 yards.
While that may seem significant, teams that fit that criteria were an unbelievable 62-0. In the most Jets fashion possible, that stat now dips to 62-1.
The Jets are always a team that makes drastic changes, whether it’s coaching, quarterback or other personnel. This year, they came in with a first-time head coach and a quarterback who hasn’t shown much but looked to prove he is a starter in this league. To address them by name, Aaron Glenn and Justin Fields may never have another opportunity in their current roles again.
Glenn is finding new ways to lose every week. A week ago, against Miami, they had a 13 penalty game and a -3 turnover differential. For the first four weeks of the season, the Jets didn’t have a defensive turnover, which is a historic rarity. They took defeat out of the jaws of victory against the Steelers and Buccaneers. Add in 2 blowouts to the Bills and Cowboys while we are at it.
Now, against the Broncos, as stated, penalties weren’t a problem, but what was is -10 net passing yards, which falls on the shoulders of Fields and the offense. Fields hasn’t been awful, but it’s fairly clear he is not the answer. His downfall really for his whole career dating back to Chicago and Pittsburg, has been game-to-game inconsistency. Seemingly, as soon as he has expectations, he shrinks, and as soon as you think he’s done, he plays like a franchise QB.
As much as has been said about Glenn and Fields, it cannot be put on them. This has been the Woody Johnson Jets, consistently an NFL bottom-feeder and a poorly run franchise defined by instability top to bottom.
While the Jets can usually put together a roster that looks great on paper, to keep it frank, they lose. Is it possible that the players they sign aren’t exactly the best? Sure, but there is a stench around this team that goes way deeper than that. Before the next 5 seasons go just how this one has, Johnson must sell the team.
