The 2000’s gave us some of the best music in recent times. Acts like Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Justin Bieber, and that’s just to name a few, came onto the scene. However before that, girl groups and boy bands were all the rave. These would be the blueprint for groups like Fifth Harmony and One Direction.
Two of the biggest girl groups in America both had R&B edge to their infectious pop songs. With hit songs like “Show Stopper,” “Buttons,” “Damaged,” and “When I Grow Up,” Dainty Kane and The Pussycat Dolls were two of America’s best girl groups of all time.
Both groups had history prior to the formation of their group. Dainty Kane held auditions and was built by Diddy. Making of The Band 3 (2005-2006) showed the steps taken to build Danity Kane. These girls included Aubrey O’Day, Dawn Richard, Shannon Bex, Aundrea Fimbres, and Wanita “D. Woods” Woodgett.
The Pussycat Dolls before their music were a dance burlesque group created by choreographer Robin Antin in the 90’s. After many negotiations , The Pussycat Dolls were signed with Nicole Scherzinger, Carmit Bachar, Ashley Roberts, Jessica Sutta, Melody Thornton and Kimberly Wyatt being the main group members.
Danity Kane and The Pussycat Dolls suffered from both management and internal conflicts. O’Day and Woods were both removed from the group by Diddy which resulted in its first disbandment. Bex, Richard and O’Day would go on to release a studio album as a trio , DK3. This would not be the last of Danity Kane music, as both O’Day and Bex created
dumblonde and Dawn and Aubrey released music together. In 2008 before The Dolls second studio album, original member Bachar left the group to pursue solo projects. This left Scherzinger , Thornton, Wyatt, Sutta and Roberts to release Doll Domination. The over-emphasis of Scherzinger caused internal conflicts and after their Doll Domination Tour, the group fully disbanded.
All members, except for Thorton, reunited in 2019 to release React and were scheduled to go on tour before the COVID-19 pandemic. After the cancellation of the tour, The Pussycat dolls disbanded yet again.
Recently in 2025, three of the Danity Kane members reunited and went on a small tour across North America. O’Day’, Woods and Fimbres were the new lineup for Danity Kane. Many fans felt the absence of Bex and Richard. However others were very happy to get their beloved group back touring. After the conclusion of the tour , rumors circulated of a much larger tour with all five happening. This will not be happening after recent news of Fimbres and Woods advertising themselves as Danity Kane for an appearance.
Many fans feel this is not fair considering their absence for most of the group and O’Day went on Twitter to express her side. Allegations of internal conflicts and bigger plans came to light, and unfortunately the end of Danity Kane for good seems inevitable.
On the other side of the girl group coin, The Pussycat Dolls reunited for the 20th anniversary and are back on the road with their new song Club Song. The tour comes as a shock considering like Danity Kane, they are reuniting as a trio. Composed of Scherzinger, Wyatt and Roberts the Dolls will start their tour this June in California. Fans noticed the missing girls (Bachar, Sutta and Thorton). Sutta and Bachar went onto social media expressing their disappointment in not receiving an invitation. The news comes as Thorton has mentioned repeatedly not wanting to return ever because of the emphasis on Scherzinger.
Putting the drama aside in both groups, it is important to understand the importance of girl groups and their contributions. These girls have created legacies that are still being referenced in today’s music. Danity Kane became the first girl group to have their first two albums debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. The Pussycat Dolls have sold millions of records with their debut album PCD releasing six chart-topping singles across the globe.
