It would be a disservice to those who deserve this platform if this took too much of your time.
This column is called “Right of the People.” This is about a document that our own nation was fought for but is not how this nation is currently being built. The United States, despite the many flaws of our government both now and since the nation’s creation, is still the greatest country in the world, and without a doubt holds its rightful place as “The Land of Opportunity.” Citizens of developed and emerging countries alike strive for the opportunities and rights we have here in this land, and that is what makes our country so great. But what is happening today is not America.
The stories of Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti are just the beginning. America is not what happened on Jan. 3 when Geraldo Lunas Campos, a 55-year-old with four children, died by homicide, in ICE custody. It is not having to discover after the fact that this was a homicide after ICE officials claimed Campos was attempting suicide and he died while ICE agents were attempting to save his life.
America is not what happened on Jan. 6 when Luis Gustavo Núñez Cáceres, a 42-year-old immigrant from Honduras, died in Immigrations and Customs Enforce (ICE) custody due to a lack of medical attention. America is not “Operation Metro Surge,” the largest immigration enforcement actions in Minnesota history, nor is it the shooting of Keith Porter Jr. by an off-duty ICE officer in Los Angeles. We are losing what America is – what America should be.
These are just the known, headline-grabbing cases. But there are many more here in our own community. This column is for anyone who feels like they have a story to tell. I implore anyone who might be reading this: If you have a story to tell, please send them in. They will be posted anonymously unless you wish otherwise. All stories are welcome, no matter where you stand on this issue – if anyone of you feel compelled to share, once again, do not hesitate. Please leave your story in the comments or email it our adviser Debbie Mura, [email protected]
Looking forward to hearing your voices.
