The United States hockey team beat Canada 2-1 in an overtime thriller to cap off the Winter Olympics in Milan. And it was 46 years to the day the last time the USA men’s hockey team took the gold back home, etching themselves in the history books right next to the legendary “miracle on ice” squad.
The game-winning Golden Goal in overtime came from the New Jersey Devils very own, Jack Hughes. Hughes followed up the biggest moment of his life with a spirited interview that matched the moment, where he said, “I’m so proud to be an American; tonight was all for our country.”
Another player to mention is the goalie, Connor Hellebuyck, who went 41/42 on save attempts and made many miraculous stops to keep the game tied at 1. There was a stigma around Hellebuyck that has followed him his entire career, and that is he can’t win big games, and that narrative is absolutely put to bed, having an all-time great performance on the Olympic stage.
Seemingly, the moment the goal horn sounded, and the celebration commenced, players brought out a Johnny Gaudreau No. 13 jersey. Johnny Gaudreau was a leader for Team USA and in the NHL before he died in 2024 due to an alleged drunk driver. Gaudreau was only 31 years old and was a father of three. A true eye-watering moment happened when the team brought out Gaudreau’s kids into the team’s picture with their father’s jersey, a tribute that will not be forgotten. Johnny’s son, Johnny Jr., turned two years old today. There is truly no place like sports.
In a time where there is so much turmoil, division, and conflict in the country, it is so refreshing to see everyone rooting and pouring love into one team, and that team having the pride for the stars and stripes that is so needed. To take down the rival up north and the All-Star team that comes with those red jerseys, it takes a great hockey team and a lot of heart.
On a broader scale, the USA will finish the Olympics second in gold and second in total medals, only to Norway, which was dominant, finalizing another successful campaign for the red, white and blue.
This team will inspire a new generation of young American hockey players to work hard and dream of that gold medal with the country across the jersey, and to that I say to Team USA, thank you.
