Governance Discusses Shortening Time To Add Courses

Brookdale’s student success/completion rate has experienced a drop that concerns many. What will Brookdale do to help guide these rates back to a healthier number?
These were among the topics discussed at Brookdale’s Oct. 24 Governance meeting in MAN 105. Governance member, Matthew Perry, also one of the college’s business instructors, discussed the possibility of shortening the class enrollment period for students who plan to pick up classes after the initial start date. To help explain and support his solution, Perry said, “Students pick up these classes, and some classes are already taking exams by the time they’ve signed up.”
Perry asked fellow members and audience members for their opinions on the idea. A majority of the attendees agreed with him that the drop in Brookdale’s student’s success/completion rate is no minor concern, and that shortening the enrollment period could ultimately benefit Brookdale students.
Perry followed his proposal by providing a code for a poll on Slido.com for the attendees. The results showed that the majority felt that this was an appropriate action to take.
Members of the Diversity Council presented a rough draft of a diversity statement, which resulted in some controversy. After reading their rough draft to the audience, they presented a poll for the audience members to complete. They encouraged the people in the meeting to submit their own opinions on this poll.
Controversially, many anonymously said that they felt the Diversity Council should not add too many names of groups, as it would always leave a group out. However, others said that they thought it was better to list as many groups as possible, so that the people who are included would feel seen.
College Life representatives also spoke at this meeting. They proposed that Brookdale develop a committee to honor deceased employees of the college. They asked fellow members and attendees if they should form a memorial committee. This committee would solely be in charge of honoring deceased Brookdale employees.
Who would fund this memorial committee? The college would have to allocate necessary resources. Though it is still only in talks of becoming a new Brookdale committee with a tentative start date of spring term January 2025.
