On Tuesday, April 7, the International Student Association (ISA) hosted the International Festival, and there was no shortage of food and entertainment.
“A lot of variety, with a lot of different cultures. It is really good,” said TIN President Atiqa Amjad describing the wide array of food that was offered, representing students ethnic backgrounds.
While the food was flying off the tables, the music club was playing the hits. Students and advisers gathered around the band and sang along.
“I enjoyed it, it was fun, and they even gave us access to play more than we prepared for, so we kind of just started doing our own thing,” said Brendan Mcreevy who led the vocals and played guitar while Nicholas Kouvaras played the drums.
When the bass player stepped out for a moment, Evan Blanco stepped right in. “I didn’t even plan on playing today. It was impromptu, but I think I did a good job.” It seems to me like the music club doesn’t need much preparation to show off their talents.
Following the great performance from the band, Rosa Juarez highlighted her Mexican culture with a dance. Sporting a long red dress and no shortage of confidence, she owned the moment. “In today’s time, some people are afraid to show their culture, which makes me want to show mine even more,” Juarez said. A roaring applause followed her as she ended her performance.
The MMA club wrapped up the festival with a few routines. With the student body gathered around, they put on quite a show. I recall an Asian routine being the cultural highlight of their performance. The choreography and the effort gave the crowd another great reason to applaud.
The ISA and the Students for Global Citizenship often work hand in hand for events like this. The president of the S4GC, Kaitlin Gilmore, said, “We stand for students with global citizenship, and we felt it was important to highlight the great diversity.”
The international festival was a hit with the food, music and cultural performances. Culture should be celebrated, and it most certainly was on Tuesday. Hats off to the ISA for a great event.
