Patricia Smith is the author of 10 books of poetry, the winner of numerous major awards including the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize for Lifetime Achievement, and has been called “the greatest living poet.” And she is the next writer coming to read as part of Brookdale’s Visiting Writers Series.
At 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 3, Smith will both perform and discuss her work, which has been described as a “gorgeous, heartbreaking evocation of her life, family and troubled nation.”
A National Book Award-nominated poet and fiction writer, Smith rose up out of the poetry slam scene and was a former 5-time National Poetry Slam champion (a record no one has beaten).Her work addresses issues around race in the US, family and relationships as well as legacies and history. Additionally, she is revered as a reader as well as a writer.
