“One of the problems with a two-year college like Brookdale is by the time you discover all the great things the school has to offer, like diverse curriculums and varied clubs, it’s time to graduate and move on to a four-year college or enter the workforce,” said Jeanette Falotico, a journalism major and president of The Innovation Network (TIN.)
Falotico echoes the feelings of many Brookdale students as they discover missed opportunities for club participation or other activities offered at Brookdale. This problem has been exacerbated by COVID-19, as students struggle with distance learning and the chance to interact with fellow students.
As COVID-19 case numbers drop and restrictions begin to lift, students can once again join in-person events, get help for a wide range of challenges and experience social interactions that have been restricted over the last two years.
When asked about the best resources for students, Erin Marie Tierney, assistant director of Student Life and Activities, recommends the Student and Employee Support at Brookdale page. “This comprehensive listing showcases everything from academic support, to safety, to student support,” Tierney said.
“Student Life and Activities offers events throughout the year,” she said. “There are lectures, live music, presentations and special events.”
Students are advised to check on the site throughout the semester for a listing of upcoming events as they become available. Information about Student Life programming can be found here https://www.brookdalecc.edu/student-life-activities/programs-events/
With over 40 active student clubs, Brookdale has a club dedicated to just about any interest. From the theater club to psychology and human services club, to student nurse association. Joining a student club opens the door to building new friendships, enhancing a student’s academic life and exploring career opportunities.
“I wish I had known about TIN earlier,” said Victoria Bahary, a 19-tear-old media studies major from Ocean Township. Bahary was attending a brunch event sponsored by TIN. “I recently joined TIN, but I’m graduating in May, and I feel I missed out on so many fun activities. I had no idea this club existed.”
Students learn important leadership and management skills as a club member. This includes planning events, participating in sporting events, organizing community service projects and more.
Clubs help students learn to work as a team, in a relaxed and healthy environment. There are opportunities to travel, network and attend conferences and leadership seminars.
